Livingston County HABITAT FOR HUMANITY is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. We seek to eliminate substandard housing. We are committed to helping local, low-income families finance and construct their own affordable homes.

What we do...

The ultimate goal of Habitat for Humanity is to eliminate poverty housing from the face of the earth by building safe, decent, affordable housing. Habitat is not a giveaway program. It is a partnership in which those who benefit from the program are involved directly in every aspect of the mission.

Close to 100% of the labor needed to build a Habitat home is performed by volunteers, including the future homeowners. They are required to complete either 300 or 500 hours of "sweat equity" (depending on whether it is a one-adult or two-adult household) as part of their partnering with Habitat to purchase a home.

Who pays for these homes and how are they built?

• Habitat homes are financed by donations from individuals and groups in our community.
• The families pay for the cost of building their homes with a low-cost mortgage.
